When obtaining informed consent, explain the law’s provision for a person’s right to confidentiality of the results of the test and any information which identifies him/her by name.
According to Florida Administrative Code, an explanation of the following information represents a sound and reasonable standard for informed consent:
- An HIV test will determine if an individual is infected with the virus which causes AIDS
- The potential uses and limitations of the test
- The procedures to be followed
- HIV testing is voluntary. Consent to be tested can be withdrawn at any time prior to the test being performed
- Reportability of positive test.
